Description:

Bishopthorpe Palace

Bishopthorpe Palace is the residence of the Archbishop of York, sited on the banks of the River Ouse just outside of the city. This Grade I listed building is of national importance for its architectural history and the many quality features.

Alan Wood & Partners was originally involved to assess the stability of four 7m high chimney stacks which could be gently swayed by simple hand pressure.

Our role has developed to include the structural design associated with the redevelopment of the site, we have had to work closely with the Conservation Architect, the Church Commissioners, the City of York Conservation Office and English Heritage to achieve the necessary improvements without compromising the established principles of conservation engineering. This has required a wide variety of approaches and an assessment of the probable imposed load in service and levels reduced from the normal British Standards values.
