Location: Scarborough
Client: Scarborough Borough Council
Consulting Engineer: Alan Wood & Partners
Project Value: £3 Million
Description:
The Rotunda Museum is a Grade II star listed building. Opened in 1829 to house the important rock and fossil collection of the Philosophical Society. Its design, in particular the central cylindrical drum, was heavily influenced by William Smith, the “Father of English Geology”.

Alan Wood & Partners was appointed as Structural Consultants at the beginning of the project on the Rotunda Museum.
Our key areas of responsibility were.
- The foundation works with its deep and complex areas of underpinning.
- Superstructure design of the extension and internal lift / stair core.
- Structural repairs to historic timber, metalwork and masonry.
- Re-routing the underground drainage.
- The design of new raised landscaping using lightweight fill above the underground car park.
