/ girls school redevelopment
Project: Redevelopment of The Girls School
Location: Low Petergate, York
Consulting Engineer: Alan Wood & Partners
Architect: Malcolm Payne Group
Client/Contractor: Geo. Houlton & Sons Ltd.
Project Value: £3.5million
Description:
The project involved the redevelopment of the former Grade Two Star Listed Girls School into ground floor retail units and residential apartments above.
A new three storey apartment complex was built at the rear of the 1960’s section of the school with a glazed link corridor created within the original building which connected the new and existing buildings.
The existing buildings were sympathetically strengthened and altered where required with minimal intervention to create the retail and residential units. A bespoke conservatory was added to the rear of the property as part of the restaurant with a view of York Minster.
The new apartment complex at the rear was carefully developed to be constructed without the use of large lifting equipment due to restricted site access. The building is a traditional load bearing masonry structure with composite metal deck.
