Description:

Alan Wood and Partners were responsible for the earthworks, foundations, floor slabs and external civil engineering works. The project included the design and onsite supervision of the earthworks and the construction of a new high bay warehouse with a floor area of approximately 17,500m2 (188,400 sq. ft.) and a capacity for 30,000 pallets, including the associated office facilities and external works.

The initial works involved major excavation and earth moving into the hillside to create a level working platform for the warehouse. The arisings from this excavation were used to create two landscaped mounds to help blend the building into its surroundings. This initial phase also included the construction of a surface water storage lagoon to attenuate flow adjacent to the flood plain. Due to the variable ground conditions the foundations for both the superstructure and the floor slab were piled. The superstructure was supported on standard 350mm diameter bearing piles and the floor was supported on approximately 1800 flared head piles with a 900mm diameter head. The floors for the mezzanine and in the office blocks were also within our scope of work. The 25m span mezzanine was designed to support racking boards and forklift traffic.
