Description:

Alan Wood & Partners project

King James School required an additional classroom block, however, due the limited space on site they were unable to use temporary classrooms. The school also wished to retain the use of the existing classroom below during the majority of the construction period.

Alan Wood & Partners project

The new classroom block therefore had to span over the existing building, so that the piled foundations could be formed during term time. The large span Virendeel girder trusses could then be installed with a short installation period over a school holiday. This minimised disruption to the school, and allowed the steel erection to proceed without the added complication of large numbers of pupils in the immediate vicinity.

The classroom block was designed as a series of Virendeel trusses spanning 34m between vertical cantilever columns. The floor deck was formed using profiled metal sheeting with additional reinforcement as required.
