Consulting Engineer: Alan Wood & Partners
Contractor: Allenbuild NE Limited
Project Value: £6million
Description:
Due to the success of The Deep millennium project, EMIH were able to secure additional funding to extend the facility to provide additional exhibition space, educational facilities, offices, reception area and restaurant.
The extension concept was to extend the building in a manner consistent with the original design, which meant infilling the space between the existing main building and the car park, this area was previously, an old slipway.
The building is supported on piled foundations with the piles extending 28m below ground level. The superstructure consists of a steel frame work and cast in-situ concrete floors and a Kalzip roof. The first floor exhibition area is designed to carry tanks with a 10m x 5m x 3m deep main exhibition tank central to the display. The external walls are rendered lightweight concrete panels tied back to the main steelwork due to the walls been designed to lean out at 8 degrees.
Alan Wood and Partners were originally employed directly by the client and were then Novated to the Building Contractor to complete the project.
