25 Million Pound Distribution Centre

The investment marks a major commitment from Arco to Hull where it can trace its history back 130-years. The company said the new centre was "the next step in its ambitious growth plans" and could create "over 200 potential new jobs in the local area".

The new building, if agreed by planners, will extend to the east of the current distribution centre and cover 20,439 square metres - around three football pitches - and will house additional warehousing and logistics.

Arco, which distributes 170,000 different work safety products around the world, said the extension will enable it to "double its output".

Neil Jowsey, joint managing director, said: "Arco is deeply committed to the local economy, its people and environment, so it made natural sense that the NDC2 be built here on home soil.

"We are working with local architects and experts to design and construct a building that will complement the surrounding area and provide a sustainable, high-tech facility to enable us to grow our business and provide a secure future for Arco in Hull."

In a statement the company said it was confident the plans were suitable for the area and complemented its existing building.

It said: "We have recruited one of the original architects who helped this become such a major iconic building in the city. Built to the latest sustainability standards and project managed by local practice Alan Wood and Partners, the new building is aesthetically designed to blend in with its local surroundings.

"The exterior façade of the building will be clad in a mosaic of colours, with blue and grey shades to complement the family of buildings."

The company said it had already completed extensive work on flood plans, drainage, sustainability, ecology and traffic impact.

The statement added: "Arco has conducted all the necessary investigations required for planning permission. Subject to planning consent, work is intended to start in 2017, opening in 2018.
