50 Years of Technical & Professional Expertise

04/03/2018

Back in the 1960s the world of construction was experiencing rapid changes. The old methods of calculation were being replaced by new electronic devices. Alan Wood & Partners were formed in 1968 to address the need for expert civil and structural consultants. Alan Wood & Partners changed the face of civil engineering in Yorkshire at the time.

At first the new computers were financially out of reach and Alan Wood & Partners had to “hire time” from other outside companies for detailed structural analysis. However, as time progressed, and Alan Wood became more successful, computers were purchased for design analysis as well as equipment for “draughting” capability in a push to keep all work in-house.

Alan Wood & Partners are now one of the biggest civil engineering firms in Yorkshire and indeed the UK. They are responsible for some of the largest and most complex construction projects in the UK to date.

Their earliest projects were based locally in Hull. These projects included: the towering tanks for Anglia Oils Ltd at King George Dock; The Salvation Army Hostel; the administration buildings for the Humber Bridge Board and in North Lincolnshire the new wharf and cargo handling facilities for Associated Waterways Services Ltd. More recent projects include the regional BBC Headquarters in Queens Gardens and the amphitheatre at the Allam Medical Building.

Having started locally with projects around their Hull office, the time came for Alan Wood & Partners to expand. First they moved into larger premises at Beverley Road, Hull in 1976.

Currently, due to location, Alan Wood & Partners are making the most of their head office on the UK’s energy estuary in Hull by providing their expertise across a wide range of technical and professional services to the renewables and energy sector. These range from high level strategic and economic input at concept stage through to detailed planning, development and delivery of projects.

Alan Wood & Partners is working hard with its partners to find alternatives to using natural resources and protect the environment as the demand for energy increases at an alarming rate. They are confident their technical ability, combined with pragmatic solutions will deliver results.

Celebrating their 50th anniversary next year, almost no one would have seen the move from long hand calculations would lead to such highly technical solutions being developed by the company. Having grown from a small Yorkshire civil engineering firm to a national civil engineering consultant, Alan Wood & Partners have really brought the benefits for clients, the public and the environment well into the 21st century.
