Druids Bridge Now Completed

Soldiers help out at Nostell Priory.

The Original Druids Bridge.

Druids Bridge at Nostell Priory was built across the narrow head of the lower lake in the C16 but for decades has lain collapsed under the water. As part of a project to resurrect the bridge, the Army Training College in Harrogate assisted The National Trust under Alan Wood & Partners supervision to construct a temporary coffer dam downstream of the bridge.   The junior soldiers in their first week of training moved 2,250 sandbags  weighing a total of 45 tonnes.

With this part of the works completed it allowed the lake to be partially drained and the ornamental stone bridge restored, which has not been seen since the 1950’s.

Druids Bridge was completed on time and within budget by Christmas there will be an official opening by the National Trust and the Heritage Lottery Fund in the Spring.
