Sulphate attack in concrete has been around for a long time and is responsible for deterioration in a wide variety of structures. It can occur either from constituents from within the concrete such as the aggregates or from external sources such as adjacent fill or groundwater.

Sulphate attack is a chemical reaction, affecting the concrete in the floor construction of properties. Sulphates present in contaminated hardcore, together with a source of moisture it reacts with the cement in the concrete causing it to expand and crack.
