The role

Are you an experienced and highly motivated Graduate Structural Engineer looking for an exciting opportunity? Working for a business who actively pursues a vision of being the place to work. Alan Wood and Partners, an agile, positive, employee focussed, problem-solving civil and structural engineering consultancy, is seeking a talented individual to join our new team as a Graduate Structural Engineer.

As a Graduate Structural Engineer within the structural team, your primary focus will be to undertake structural engineering design, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations.

You will contribute to the production of technical drawings, calculations, and specifications, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop integrated design solutions. You will be expected to provide technical guidance to apprentice engineers, maintain high technical standards, and build and maintain strong relationships with clients and stakeholders.

You will be required to plan your work in a structured manner, working with colleagues in addressing peaks and troughs in resource demand, and help to prioritise project delivery.

Required for the position

To be successful in this role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • A degree in civil or structural engineering (or equivalent). A Master’s degree would be advantageous but not essential.
  • Working towards professional accreditation (e.g., Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer status) with a relevant institution such as the ICE or IStructE.
  • Around 2-3 years’ post-graduate experience in an engineering design consultancy or similar environment, ideally involving the design and delivery of structural or civil engineering projects.
  • Some experience assisting in the delivery of small to medium-sized projects, with a desire to take on increasing responsibility under supervision.
  • A developed knowledge of structural design and assessment of concrete, steel, masonry, and timber structures using UK Standards and Eurocodes.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis and design software, such as Tekla Structural Designer (TSD), Robot, or similar tools.
  • Competent user of Excel, with exposure to tools like TEDDS, AutoCAD, and/or Revit.
  • An understanding of how to prepare or contribute to technical reports, specifications (e.g., using NBS), and engineering drawings.
  • Willingness to participate in structural inspections and condition surveys, with support from senior engineers.
  • A team player with an enthusiastic and proactive attitude, keen to learn and develop technical and professional skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues and clients.
  • A full UK driving licence (or working towards obtaining one, if applicable).
