Rail Depot Extension

Alan Wood and Partners

Working in conjunction with the main contractor, C Spencer Ltd, Alan Wood & Partners were awarded the design contract at New Cross Gate on the behalf of Transport for London.

The project included the improvements and conversion of New Cross Gate depot from a 4-car to a 5-car facility for London Overground. The project included extension and modifications to the main maintenance building, wheel lathe Building (including new wheel lathe pits), relocation and extension of the 25kV test track and reconfiguration of the stabling roads within the Depot to accommodate 5-car trains.

Challenges and Successes

The project included the improvements and conversion of New Cross Gate depot from a 4-car to a 5-car facility for London Overground. The project included extension and modifications to the main maintenance building, wheel lathe Building (including new wheel lathe pits), relocation and extension of the 25kV test track and reconfiguration of the stabling roads within the Depot to accommodate 5-car trains.

Maintaining full operational capacity during intrusive construction at the depot was a significant challenge, requiring close collaboration with stakeholders to align the civil and structural design with operational constraints. The tight schedule and critical milestones for track possessions allowed little margin for error, necessitating intensive resourcing and guidance from experienced rail experts.

The wheel lathe and maintenance pits involved complex reinforced concrete detailing. Clear and concise information from the engineering team enabled smooth construction, with the project completed on time, within budget, and to stakeholders' satisfaction.
