Urgent Treatment Centre, James Cook Hospital

James Cook Hospital - P+HS Architects

Alan Wood & Partners worked with Premier Modular to create a new Urgent Treatment Centre for South Tees Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

As part of a larger investment piece into Emergency Care at the Trust, the new treatment centre was designed to improve patient flow, increase capacity and reduce pressure on  A&E.

The volumetric modular building is carefully positioned between existing structures with links into current buildings such as the emergency department and other treatment rooms.  The design included a dynamic footfall analysis of the floor plate to ensure the limits identified within HTM:08 were not exceeded.

Alan Wood & Partners undertook the structural design of the modular building incorporating a cantilever section to support an additional upper floor area. Several links to the surrounding buildings are supported via traditional steel transfer structures. The lateral stability of the building was a hybrid solution between portalised module end frames and braced bays. The modules were formed via two fully welded end frames and two cold formed steel chassis’.
