New Centre for Digital Innovation (C4Di)

Alan Wood and Partners

Alan Wood & Partners were commissioned by the Wykeland Group to provide Project Management, Civil and Structural engineering services for the new C4Di Centre for Digital Innovation building and future phases.

Engineering and Design Factors

The site had been subject to historic development which was in part of significant archaeological interest. Whilst all the above ground structures had been demolished some time ago there were underground features and foundations which required archaeological investigation.

The foundation solution for the new structures required an approach which recognised the archaeological sensitivity, preserving certain elements all of which needed to be agreed with Historic England. In addition to this the ground conditions were very poor and required the structures to be supported on a piled foundation with pile positions designed to avoid relic foundations where possible. The adjacency of the historic dry dock and the Humber Estuary added further challenges requiring engineering innovation. The exposed marine conditions dictated focus on durability of materials used in the construction.

Description of the Works

The project value of phase 1 was Circa £3.6 million and creates a unique investment to create a digital hub for Hull and the Humber region.  The building will form the centre of a £14 million @thedock scheme and will be the home to some of the most innovative start-ups and business working in the UK. Alan Wood & Partners have subsequently provided services for all phases.
