The Lincolnshire Lakes regeneration scheme will deliver six new waterside villages featuring lakes, artificial beaches, leisure facilities, schools, hospitality venues, and more than 7,000 new homes.
To support this growth, significant upgrades to the transport network around the M181/A1077(M) and the B1450 Burringham Road are required. Following construction of the M181 roundabout designed by Alan Wood & Partners (AWP), North Lincolnshire Council needed to amend the existing design and planning application for three proposed roundabouts. This would enable the eastern roundabout to be built while maintaining continuous access along Burringham Road.
The eastern roundabout will provide essential access to the first phase of residential development to the north. It also creates a more direct connection between Scunthorpe and the M181/A1077(M) towards the M180, removing the need for vehicles to route via Doncaster Road, improving journey times for locals.
AWP was appointed to redesign the approved three‑arm layout into a five‑arm roundabout. The revised scheme delivers connection to future southern development land and introduces a temporary arm to prevent severing Burringham Road prior to delivery of the future western roundabout. Pedestrian and cyclist movements were carefully addressed to ensure safe, continuous routes during both temporary and permanent phases.
AWP delivered the revised design within a demanding accelerated programme, supporting the Council’s delivery priorities and enabling progress on this key infrastructure scheme.
