Alan Wood & Partners (AWP) worked with Western Building Systems Limited to create a new Endoscopy unit for East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
As part of a wider hospital development, this project delivers additional endoscopy facilities alongside expanded parking provision. The new building sits within the main hospital estate and is designed to operate independently while integrating seamlessly with the existing site layout and clinical infrastructure.
The scheme features a traditional steel-frame structure and includes several key components, such as an independent gas store building and a full drainage strategy incorporating attenuation tanks designed in accordance with the SuDS hierarchy. A dynamic footfall analysis was also undertaken to ensure the proposed floor plate met the performance requirements of HTM:08, preventing any exceedance of acceptable vibration criteria.
AWP was responsible for both the structural and civil design elements of the project. This involved developing a piled foundation solution and delivering a building that performs structurally independent of the existing hospital. Lateral stability was achieved through a hybrid approach, combining portalised steel frames with areas of flat cross‑bracing to create a robust and efficient structural system.
